Amanda_Lindhout_400x550-e1440532708829In 2008, Amanda Lindhout traveled to Somalia as a freelance journalist to research a story on the millions of people affected by two decades of war, drought, and famine. Kidnapped by teenage criminals outside of the capital city, Mogadishu, Amanda spent 460 days enduring unimaginable hardships as a hostage in one of the world’s poorest countries.

Following her release in November 2009, she became an unlikely and passionate advocate for the people of Somalia. Four months after returning home, Amanda founded the Global Enrichment Foundation (GEF) to ignite leadership in Somalia through education and economic initiatives which the GEF creates, funds and implements.

Amanda’s memoir, A House InThe Sky, is a New York Times bestseller and is slated for development as a major motion picture with Annapurna Pictures. Oscar nominated actress Rooney Mara is set to produce and star in the film.

LUCHO reNew and reDo Models’ Party

On the afternoon of Saturday, June 11th, LUCHO opened up their stunning boutique for the reNew and reDo Models’ Party. LUCHO welcome all our models with appetizers, macaroons, and bubbly. Its ravishing display of menswear and women’s shoes was the perfect spot for all the models to mingle and shop.

Many of our models, with a willing heart, donated their clothes to The Cottage Shop for our upcoming fashion show, reNew and reDo. Our models had fun meeting each other for the first time or reconnecting after not seeing each other in a while. The store was filled with laughter, cheer and glee. Later on Michael Pearce, co-chair of our 2016 reNew and reDo Fashion Show, thanked all our models for their commitment to The Women’s Home and to reNew and reDo. We look forward to seeing them walk the runway in fabulous designs from The Cottage Shop’s collection later this August.

Conversations with Jamey Rootes, President of the Houston Texans

Jamey Rootes_06102016_ ©Roswitha Vogler_046

On Friday, June 10th, 2016, nearly 70 guests gathered together for “Conversations with Jamey Rootes”, the second of three luncheons hosted by The Women’s Home this year featuring interesting Houstonians. The event took place at Tony’s on Richmond – Restaurateur Tony Vallone’s premier destination for innovative fine dining in Houston for more than 50 years. Guests dined on a wonderful meal that included Bosc Pear Salad, Salmon al Limone, Chicken Fancese, and Tuxedo Cake in the restaurant’s hip, modern San Remo Room.

Jamey Rootes, President of the Houston Texans, was the special guest speaker at the event. Rootes is responsible for all business functions of the Houston Texans franchise. Since joining the Texans, he has overseen the team’s efforts to secure stadium naming rights and sponsorship, coordinated radio and TV broadcasting relationships, engineered the club’s successful ticket and suite sales campaigns, led the creation and launch of the team’s identity and developed the team’s highly-acclaimed customer service strategy.

Former defensive back of the Houston Oilers, Willie J. Alexander, served as moderator. He is currently the Principal and President of W.J. Alexander & Associates, P.C., a full-service employee benefits consulting, property & casualty, and insurance brokerage firm. Mr. Alexander began his career playing defensive back for the Houston Oilers from 1971-1980.  His entrepreneurial skills were developed after seven years as a lead broker for several major insurance companies specializing in life insurance, group health insurance and estate preservation. He established his own firm in 1981.

This dynamic duo had our attendees engaged from beginning to end. Together, they discussed topics ranging from  Rootes’ origin in helping establish the Columbus Crew – a startup major league soccer team  who not only won games, but positivity influenced the community –  to his current roles as President of the Houston Texans and Chairman of Board of Directors for the Greater Houston Partnership. Rootes highlighted Houston’s endless potential as the 4th largest city in America and gateway to the country’s emerging third coast.

Rootes and Alexander emphasized that Houston’s diversity, wealth of opportunity, and passionate citizens make it a desirable place to live. They both believe Houston is a place where people can start new journeys and offers endless opportunities for the future. Their message encapsulates the mission of The Women’s Home, who seeks to offer women a helping hand as they build whole lives.

JAMEY ROOTES, PRESIDENT OF THE HOUSTON TEXANS

Our Speaker

Jamey Rootes serves as president of the Houston Texans and is responsible for all business functions of the club. Since joining the Texans, Rootes has overseen the team’s efforts to secure stadium naming rights and sponsorship, coordinated radio and TV broadcasting relationships, engineered the club’s successful ticket and suite sales campaigns, led the creation and launch of the team’s identity and developed the team’s highly-acclaimed customer service strategy.

Under Rootes’ leadership, the Texans have earned many distinctions, including numerous “Crystal Awards” for marketing excellence. J.D. Power & Associates recognized the team for providing the best fan experience in the NFL and even featured the Texans as a service success story in their book entitled “Satisfaction.” The Texans were also recognized with Sports Business Journal’s PRISM Award, which is given annually to the top major professional sports team based on business excellence criteria. In 2015, the Texans extended their sell-out streak to 143 consecutive home games, a Houston NFL record and a testament to the quality of service and entertainment provided by the organization on game day. As a result, the Texans have consistently been recognized as one of the most valuable professional sports franchises both in the NFL and globally, as measured by a variety of business publications. In 2013, 2014 and 2015 the Texans were recognized by the Houston Chronicle as one of “Houston’s Top Workplaces”.

Rootes was selected twice by SportsBusiness Journal as a member of its distinguished “Forty Under 40” list of leading sports executives. In 2014, Rootes was named a finalist for Executive of the Year by the Stadium Business Awards. Rootes maintains an active role in the community and serves on a number of boards, including the United Way, the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau, and he is Chairman of the Greater Houston Partnership. He also oversees the activities of the Houston Texans Foundation, which generates well over $1 million annually to benefit youth and families in the Houston area. Since inception, the Texans have helped raise well over $20 million through annual fundraising events, disaster response programs, the United Way and partnerships with non-profit organizations on game day.

Prior to joining the Texans, Rootes helped to launch Major League Soccer as president and general manager of the Columbus Crew. During his tenure, the Crew was consistently among the league’s strongest teams both on and off the field, and Rootes was recognized as Executive of the Year in 1996 and Marketing Executive of the Year in 1999. Rootes helped lead the construction of Crew Stadium in 1999, which was the first stadium of its type in the United States. This facility earned distinction as America’s Foremost Sports Facility of the Year and led to the development of numerous soccer-specific stadiums across the United States over the past decade, including BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.

Rootes also serves as President of Lone Star Sports & Entertainment (LSSE), a sports management agency associated with the Texans. LSSE has been a catalyst for some of Houston’s most significant sporting events. LSSE created and now manages the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl, Houston’s annual college football bowl game.  Over the past decade, the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl has become the best attended bowl game outside of the College Football Playoff.  The Bowl’s charity partner, DePelchin Children’s Centers, has received over $1 million to support their important work with the youth and families of the Houston Area. In 2015, the bowl featured the LSU Tigers and Texas Tech Red Raiders and the sold-out game was the largest bowl game crowd in Houston history. LSSE also created and manages an annual Labor Day college football game (the AdvoCare Texas Kick-Off) which holds the record for the largest college football crowd in NRG Stadium history. The projected annual economic impact of these two games is $100 mm with approximately 100K out of town visitors.

Outside of football, LSSE has been a leader in soccer beginning with the 2003 U.S. vs. Mexico soccer match which set a soccer attendance record for Texas and caused U.S. Soccer to recognize NRG Stadium with the Best Soccer Crowd in America award. LSSE has also hosted large crowds for Interliga 2004-2006, Gold Cup in 2005 and Barcelona on Tour in 2006. This success led to the establishment of Houston’s Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise, the Houston Dynamo in 2006, which is now the two-time champion of MLS and playing in the newly constructed BBVA Compass Stadium. More recently, LSSE hosted large crowds for Gold Cup 2007, 2009 and 2011, a capacity crowd of over 70,000 for U.S. vs. Mexico in February 2008, Houston’s first-ever World Cup qualifier with Mexico and Belize and the 2010 MLS All-Star game featuring Manchester United which set a new NRG Stadium soccer attendance record of 70,728. In June of 2016, LSSE will bring Copa America Centenario to Houston and NRG Stadium. Copa America will be the largest and most prestigious soccer tournament to be held in the United States since World Cup USA 94. In total, LSSE has hosted the Mexican National Team fourteen (14) times with an average attendance of over 60,000 passionate fans, establishing NRG Stadium as United States’ home for “El Tri.” LSSE has also hosted consistently record crowds for the Battle of the Pineywoods college football rivalry game, as well as major concerts featuring Kenny Chesney, George Strait, Tim McGraw and other artists.

A native of Stone Mountain, Ga., Rootes graduated Cum Laude from the Calhoun Honors College at Clemson University and was a member of the Tigers’ soccer team that captured two NCAA titles. He also served as Student Body President. While earning a master’s of business administration with honors at Indiana University, he served as an assistant soccer coach for the Hoosiers. Rootes previously held positions at IBM and Procter & Gamble before entering sports. He lives in West University with his wife, Melissa, and their children, Chris and Caroline.
